Maker of Paxil Settles Some Lawsuits
GlaxoSmithKline, the maker of the anti-depressant Paxil, announced yesterday that it has settled certain lawsuits claiming Paxil (generic paroxetine) caused birth defects in babies of certain women who took the drug while pregnant. GSK stated in a companywide email that it has agreed to pay over $1 billion to resolve over 800 claims. This settlement provides each family affected by the dangerous drug approximately $1.2 million. At this time, there are still well over 100 Paxil cases pending.
Paxil is a drug that is in the class of SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), and when taken during the first three months of pregnancy, may cause serious birth defects. Two potentially serious forms of birth complications that have been linked to Paxil are heart defects and PPHN (persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn).
